Years ago, I was asked to collaborate on an outreach initiative that involved the 1000 Hills Community Helpers. The goal was to show the life and joy of the children and community members that attended the school in the area and how everyone came together to learn and grow.

This project sparked my love and commitment to documentary photography and environmental portraiture. The results form my use of digital and black and white film heavily influenced my style moving forward. It helped me realise that without colour, the photograph takes on an entirely different energy - focusing exclusively on composition, contrast and the subject itself without the interruption of colour.

Colour is a beautiful addition to photography, however, there is something timeless about a black and white image that is decidedly present.
